What the Aldabra reef system is
Aldabra is an oceanic atoll whose reef-built rim has been raised several metres above modern sea level. The four main islands nearly encircle a lagoon of about 200 square kilometres, but the ring is not closed: channels across the northwestern side connect the inner basin directly to the ocean. Numerous smaller islets, shoals, mudflats, and reef patches break up the lagoon interior.
The present reef system occupies several physical zones. An outer fringing reef faces the open Indian Ocean, a broad reef flat lies along much of the island margin, and channel reefs grow under strong tidal flow. Inside the rim, shallow-water carbonate surfaces alternate with deeper channels and low-tide exposures. This arrangement makes water exchange, not river inflow, the dominant process linking the lagoon and surrounding sea.
Beyond the Seychelles Bank
Aldabra lies near 9°24′ south and 46°22′ east in the southwestern Indian Ocean. It is more than 1,000 kilometres southwest of Mahé, about 420 kilometres northwest of Madagascar, and roughly 630 kilometres east of the African mainland. The atoll belongs to the Aldabra Group of the coralline Outer Islands of Seychelles rather than to the granitic Inner Islands on the Seychelles Bank.
Nearby Assumption Island and the atolls of Cosmoledo and Astove form the closest regional group, yet deep water separates their individual platforms. Aldabra therefore has no broad continental shelf connecting it to Africa or Madagascar. Its shoreline marks the narrow top of an isolated submarine rise, and water depths increase sharply beyond the reef edge.
An oval rim, lagoon, and ocean-facing terrace
Grande Terre forms most of the southern and eastern rim. Malabar lies along the north, Picard occupies the west, and smaller Polymnie stands between the main northern and western passages. Together they outline an east–west oval around the lagoon. The islands average only a few kilometres in width, so the inner lagoon shore and outer ocean shore remain close despite their very different exposure.
The seaward margin includes a limestone shoreline, intertidal platform, reef flat, and fore-reef slope. Along the lagoon side, indented limestone edges, shallow embayments, mudflats, and mangrove-fringed channels create a more sheltered margin. Openings in the rim concentrate tidal flow, while the more continuous southern and eastern sides receive stronger wave energy during the southeast trade-wind season.

Pleistocene terraces and karst surfaces
Most of Aldabra's dry land consists of reef limestone deposited during a higher sea-level phase about 125,000 years ago. Broad surfaces occur at roughly four and eight metres above present mean sea level. These small elevations are enough to distinguish Aldabra from low sand-cay atolls, but the overall relief remains subdued when compared with volcanic or granitic islands.
Rainwater and salt spray dissolve and weather the exposed carbonate rock into pits, fissures, sharp pinnacles, and irregular pavements. Local dunes and storm-deposited ridges add softer relief near parts of the coast. The strongest vertical contrast is submarine: a platform only a few metres above or below sea level gives way beyond the reef to slopes descending into water thousands of metres deep.
A lagoon paced by semidiurnal tides
Twice-daily tides move large volumes of seawater through the limited openings in the atoll rim. The narrow passages accelerate the flow and delay the tidal signal inside the lagoon. Water level and tidal range therefore vary from the channel mouths to the far eastern and southern reaches of the basin, rather than rising and falling everywhere at the same time.
At low tide, extensive reef flats and sediment surfaces emerge, and much of the lagoon's water drains toward the passes. Incoming water then spreads back across the shallow interior on the flood tide. The moving water redistributes carbonate sand and mud, scours channels, and maintains a strong physical connection between lagoon and ocean. On land, low relief and porous limestone limit surface runoff; Aldabra has no substantial river system, and rainfall commonly enters the rock or collects in small depressions.
Trade winds, a short wet season, and uneven exposure
Aldabra has a warm tropical, seasonally dry marine climate. Stronger southeast trade winds usually dominate from May to October. From November into March or April, lighter northwesterly monsoon flow brings the wetter part of the year. Rainfall is modest and variable for the tropics, and the absence of high ground means there is little orographic enhancement.
Seasonal wind direction shapes the reef margins. South- and east-facing coasts are generally more exposed to trade-wind waves, while northern and lagoon shores are more sheltered. Ocean swell, episodic storms, and tides move loose reef sediment among flats, beaches, dunes, and lagoon deposits. Heat, evaporation, and rainfall also produce short-term differences between shallow lagoon water and the better-mixed outer sea.
In the path of the South Equatorial Current
The South Equatorial Current carries surface water westward past Aldabra toward East Africa. Where that flow meets the steep-sided atoll, it is deflected around the platform and can generate mixing and downstream eddies. Tidal jets at the lagoon passes add a smaller, faster circulation system at the reef scale.
Aldabra belongs to the western Indian Ocean family of isolated carbonate platforms, but its raised limestone rim distinguishes it from many lower or mostly submerged systems.
