Great Slave Lake

Great Slave Lake is a large freshwater lake in Canada's Northwest Territories and a central water-storage basin in the Mackenzie River system. Its broad, comparatively shallow western waters contrast with the narrow, steep-sided, and much deeper East Arm. The Slave River supplies most of the inflow from the south, while the Mackenzie River begins at the lake's western outlet.

Overview

What Great Slave Lake is

Great Slave Lake occupies a major depression near the northern edge of the continental interior. It is a freshwater lake with an outlet, not a closed basin. Water arriving from the Peace–Athabasca–Slave system and from rivers around the lake is stored and mixed before continuing northwest into the Mackenzie River and ultimately the Arctic Ocean.

The lake is physically divided rather than uniform. The West Basin is wide, relatively shallow, and bordered in many places by low shores, wetlands, and sediment-rich river mouths. The North Arm projects toward Yellowknife and Behchoko through shallower water. Eastward, long peninsulas and island chains divide the East Arm into narrow reaches and deep bays carved within resistant Shield terrain.

Location & Extent

Across the plains–Shield boundary

The lake lies entirely within the Northwest Territories, between roughly 60° and 63° north. Yellowknife stands on the north shore at Yellowknife Bay, Hay River lies near the southwestern shore, and the Slave River reaches the lake beside its delta near Fort Resolution. At the western end, the lake narrows toward the Mackenzie River outlet near Fort Providence.

Its western and southern margins belong largely to the low-relief Interior Plains, where sedimentary rocks and thick surface deposits support broad deltas, wetlands, beaches, and gently sloping lake floors. The eastern and northeastern shores cross the Canadian Shield. There, old crystalline rocks rise through thin glacial deposits as ridges, cliffs, headlands, and islands, giving the shoreline a more angular and deeply indented form.

Basin & Relief

Shallow western water and a deep eastern trough

Continental ice enlarged and reshaped pre-existing depressions, scoured Shield bedrock, and spread till, sand, silt, and clay across the surrounding lowlands. As the ice retreated, a much larger proglacial lake occupied the region. Falling water levels, drainage changes, sediment accumulation, and rebound of the land gradually produced the modern shoreline.

The resulting bathymetry is strongly uneven. The broad West Basin has a cited maximum depth of about 60 meters, and large areas are less than 25 meters deep. The East Arm is narrower but much deeper: submerged rock slopes descend into long basins, and Christie Bay reaches about 614 meters. Faults, fractures, and resistant bedrock help guide the East Arm's northeast-trending channels, while peninsulas and islands separate open water into distinct bays and passages.

Hydrology

Slave River inflow and Mackenzie River outflow

The Slave River is the lake's dominant inflow. It enters the south shore through a distributary delta and carries water gathered from the Peace River and the Lake Athabasca system far to the south and southwest. The Hay and Taltson rivers also enter the southern and western lake. The Lockhart River is the principal tributary of the East Arm, while the Snare, Yellowknife, and other smaller rivers drain northern Shield catchments.

Water leaves at the western end as the Mackenzie River. The lake's great volume moderates short-term changes between incoming and outgoing flow, but lake levels still respond to the combined effects of upstream river discharge, local snowmelt and rainfall, evaporation, wind, and conditions at the outlet. In the shallow west, winds can move surface water across long distances and alter nearshore levels; river deltas continually redistribute sand, silt, and organic sediment.

Climate Controls

Subarctic seasons, ice, and delayed warming

Great Slave Lake lies in a continental subarctic climate with long cold winters, short summers, and strong seasonal changes in daylight. Ice forms first in sheltered bays and along the shore, then spreads across the open lake. Breakup reverses that sequence in late spring and early summer, with shallow river mouths and nearshore water generally opening before exposed deep-water areas.

Depth produces an important internal climate contrast. Shallow western water warms and mixes more readily during summer, while the East Arm's deep basins retain cold water and respond more slowly. The lake releases stored heat in autumn, locally delaying freeze-up beside open water, but the long ice season remains the dominant annual condition. Snowmelt timing, ice breakup on tributaries, summer rainfall, and evaporation during the brief open-water season together control the yearly water balance.

Regional Connections

A hinge in the Mackenzie drainage system

Great Slave Lake links several major physical regions. Upstream, the Slave River connects it to the northern plains, the Peace–Athabasca delta, and headwaters that extend toward the Rocky Mountains. East and north of the lake, short rivers drain glaciated Shield uplands. Downstream, the Mackenzie River carries the combined flow through the Mackenzie Valley to its delta on the Beaufort Sea.

This position makes Great Slave Lake both a receiving basin and the effective headwater reservoir of the Mackenzie River.
