What the Monte Desert is
The Monte Desert is a desert and semi-desert region on the eastern side of the Andes and associated ranges in Argentina. It is commonly divided into the Monte of Sierras and Bolsons in the north and the Monte of Plains and Plateaus farther south. Those names describe a real change in landform: steep mountain blocks and enclosed basins dominate the northern sector, while wide plains and terraced tablelands become more prominent from Mendoza toward the Atlantic.
The word monte is also used for the characteristic open shrubland of the region, but this atlas record centers on its physical framework. Mountain barriers, internal basins, alluvial sediment, sparse local runoff, wind action, and a strong moisture deficit organize the landscape. It is therefore not a single sand sea; gravel plains, pediments, salt depressions, rocky slopes, and river corridors are as important as dune fields.
A dry belt from the northwest to the Atlantic
The Monte begins in the intermontane country of northwestern Argentina and follows the eastern side of the Andes through Catamarca, La Rioja, San Juan, and Mendoza. It broadens across parts of San Luis, western La Pampa, and eastern Neuquén, then turns southeast across Río Negro and northeastern Chubut toward the Atlantic coast.
Its borders are mostly transition zones rather than surveyed lines. High Andean and pre-Andean relief gives the western edge a comparatively strong topographic expression. Eastward, the desert grades into the drier Chaco and Espinal landscapes as rainfall increases. In the south it interlocks with the Patagonian Desert, where changing rainfall seasonality, cooler conditions, and steppe terrain make the division gradual.
From mountain basins to stepped tablelands
Northern Monte relief is organized by north-south mountain ranges separated by valleys and bolsons—broad, sediment-filled depressions that may have limited external drainage. Bedrock slopes descend through pediments and alluvial fans to sandy or silty basin floors. Where drainage closes, fine sediment and dissolved minerals accumulate in playas and salinas.
In the central Monte, adjoining fans merge into extensive alluvial and wind-reworked plains. Farther south, abrupt ranges become less continuous and the dominant pattern changes to gravel sheets, low hills, broad depressions, volcanic tracts, and stepped plateaus. Coastal cliffs and marine sedimentary surfaces appear where the Monte reaches the Atlantic side of Río Negro and Chubut.

Closed drainage and rivers from the Andes
Most small Monte channels carry water only after rain or during seasonal snowmelt from nearby uplands. On alluvial fans, flow can divide into shallow distributaries and disappear through infiltration and evaporation. In closed depressions, occasional runoff ends in shallow lakes, mudflats, or salinas that may remain dry for seasons or years and become sources of windblown dust.
The larger rivers tell a different story because many begin beyond the desert in the high Andes. The San Juan, Mendoza, Tunuyán, and other western rivers feed the Desaguadero system, while the Colorado and Negro cross southern drylands on their way to the Atlantic. These through-flowing corridors transport water and sediment across arid ground and connect mountain catchments, groundwater, wetlands, and lowland valleys even where rainfall on the desert floor is slight.
Mountain barriers and a shifting rainfall regime
The Monte has an arid to semi-arid climate with high potential evaporation. Subtropical high pressure promotes dry, stable conditions, while the Andes, Precordillera, and Sierras Pampeanas redirect or block moisture-bearing air. In northern and central basins, the Sierras Pampeanas limit moisture arriving from the Atlantic; along the western and southern sectors, the Andean cordillera strongly influences Pacific air and the distribution of rain and snow.
Because the desert crosses about twenty degrees of latitude, no single seasonal pattern describes it all. Summer rainfall is most important across much of the northern Monte, but rainfall becomes more evenly distributed southward and winter influence increases near the Patagonian transition. Annual totals vary widely with elevation and exposure, from less than 100 millimetres in the driest interiors to several hundred millimetres near some margins. Large day-to-night temperature ranges, long dry intervals, and stronger winds in the south reinforce the regional water deficit.
Part of South America's arid diagonal
The Monte forms the Argentine interior segment of the South American arid diagonal, a broad chain of dry environments that includes high Andean, Pacific coastal, rain-shadow, and Patagonian landscapes. Its position helps connect the elevated basins near the Andes with low plateaus that reach the Atlantic side of the continent.
Within the Desert Hub, the clearest comparison is with the Patagonian Desert to the south. Both include gravel plains, wind exposure, and Andean drainage connections, but the Monte extends farther into subtropical latitudes and contains a larger system of intermontane bolsons and summer-rainfall basins. The Atacama Desert lies west of the Andes and illustrates a contrasting Pacific-margin dryland controlled more directly by coastal atmospheric stability.
