Betpak-Dala Desert

Betpak-Dala is a broad desert plateau in central and southern Kazakhstan, between the lower Sarysu River, the Chu River, and Lake Balkhash. Its subdued western clay plains, takyrs, salt-affected hollows, and rocky eastern hills form a dry transition between the Turan lowlands and the Kazakh Uplands.

Overview

What Betpak-Dala is

Betpak-Dala is commonly called a desert, but it is also a plateau: an elevated, mostly low-relief surface standing between river valleys and the western end of the Balkhash basin. Much of it is firm clayey or stony ground rather than loose sand. Wind erosion, weathering, sheet wash, and salt accumulation have produced a varied surface of plains, low scarps, shallow basins, exposed rock, and dry channels.

The plateau has two broad physical divisions. In the west, younger sedimentary rocks and surface deposits underlie flat or gently rolling terrain. Farther east, older folded and crystalline rocks emerge in a hillier continuation of the Kazakh Uplands. This contrast controls local relief, drainage routes, soil texture, and the distribution of salt-affected depressions.

Location and Extent

Between Sarysu, Chu, and Balkhash

The Betpak-Dala plateau lies wholly within Kazakhstan. The lower Sarysu valley marks its western side, the Chu River and the Moyynkum sands lie to the south, and the western shorelands of Lake Balkhash form its eastern approach. To the north, the terrain rises and merges into the low hills and dry plains of central Kazakhstan.

These margins are geographic guides rather than continuous walls. Dry valleys, low divides, and transition plains connect Betpak-Dala with the surrounding country, and mapped limits vary according to whether the outer semi-desert and sandy tracts are included. The commonly quoted area of about 75,000 square kilometres therefore describes the wider plateau-desert region.

Structure and Relief

Clay plains west, rock hills east

Western Betpak-Dala is a flat to gently undulating tableland, generally around 250 to 350 metres above sea level. Horizontal or weakly tilted sedimentary layers help create broad divides, shallow enclosed depressions, clay pans, and takyrs—hard, nearly level surfaces formed where fine sediment collects and dries. Saline hollows occur where runoff has no outlet and evaporation concentrates dissolved minerals.

The eastern plateau is rougher and higher. It continues the ancient geological structures of the Kazakh Uplands, with Paleozoic sedimentary and igneous rocks exposed in low ranges, isolated hills, ridges, and rock-strewn slopes. The Zheltau upland reaches about 972 metres at Kyzylbelen, giving eastern Betpak-Dala a much stronger local relief than the western plain.

Hydrology

Closed basins and temporary flow

Betpak-Dala has no dense, integrated river network. Limited precipitation falls on a landscape of shallow internal basins, permeable patches, and broad divides. Snowmelt and heavy rain can send short-lived flow along dry channels and into depressions, but much of the water soon infiltrates or evaporates. Temporary pools, clay pans, and saline lake beds occupy some of the lowest ground.

The Sarysu and Chu define important outer connections without draining the entire plateau. The Sarysu loses water as it approaches the western drylands, while the Chu spreads and diminishes downstream along the desert's southern margin. Eastward drainage toward Lake Balkhash is also weak: many small channels from the drier country north and west of the lake end before reaching open water. Groundwater occurs in sediment and fractured rock, but its availability and mineral content vary greatly.

Climate

Cold-winter continental aridity

The desert has a sharply continental climate, with hot, dry summers, cold winters, and large daily and seasonal temperature ranges. Annual precipitation is commonly about 100 to 150 millimetres across the lower desert, though totals vary with location and elevation. Most moisture arrives outside the hottest part of the year, and winter snow is usually shallow and uneven.

Betpak-Dala lies deep within Eurasia, far from dependable oceanic moisture. Mountain systems to the south and southeast reduce the moisture reaching the interior, while summer heat, dry air, and wind maintain a large evaporation deficit. The higher and more broken eastern terrain can receive somewhat more moisture than the western plain, but the plateau remains an arid landscape throughout.

Regional Connections

At the meeting of upland and basin

Betpak-Dala belongs in the Desert Hub as a plateau dryland defined by geology, internal drainage, and continental water deficit rather than by an extensive sand sea. Its eastern rocky country links physically with the Kazakh Uplands, while its flatter western and southern margins connect with the enclosed lowlands and sandy deserts of Central Asia.

The Kyzylkum Desert offers a useful regional contrast: both are cold-winter deserts with sparse drainage, but the Kyzylkum is dominated more strongly by sand plains and river-derived sediment. Farther northeast, the Gobi Desert provides a broader comparison for continental stony and gravelly drylands with marked seasonal temperature extremes.
