What Lighthouse Reef is
Lighthouse Reef is one of the three large offshore atolls associated with Belize, together with Turneffe Atoll and Glover’s Reef. It is the easternmost of the three and stands beyond the coast-parallel Belize Barrier Reef, separated from the mainland by shelf water, the main barrier, Turneffe Atoll, and deeper marine channels.
The name describes more than the living reef crest. Lighthouse Reef is a complete carbonate landform made up of fore-reef slopes, a windward rim, discontinuous leeward reef, lagoon basins, patch-reef chains, sediment flats, marine cuts, sandy cayes, and the flooded karst feature known as the Great Blue Hole.
Belize’s outer Caribbean atoll
The atoll lies near 17°20′ north and 87°30′ west, about 80 kilometres from the mainland coast of Belize. Belize City is to the west-southwest, Turneffe Atoll lies immediately west across deep water, and Glover’s Reef lies farther south. Open Caribbean water borders the eastern side.
Lighthouse Reef extends about 35 kilometres from north to south and is up to 7.5 kilometres wide. Its total platform area is approximately 200 square kilometres, of which the lagoon accounts for about 112 square kilometres. This long, narrow footprint differs from the broader island-and-lagoon complex of Turneffe and the wider oval form of Glover’s Reef.
Windward rim, leeward cuts, and a middle reef
The eastern margin faces the prevailing trade winds and Caribbean swell. Here a developed reef crest and spur-and-groove fore reef form the atoll’s main windward boundary. Waves lose energy across the shallow crest and reef flat before their water reaches the lagoon.
The western, leeward rim is more discontinuous. Numerous gaps, including several principal tidal cuts, connect the interior with the surrounding sea. A nearly 20-kilometre chain of patch reefs known as the middle reef runs north–south through the lagoon. This linear reef high is a central organizing feature rather than a second enclosing rim.

A shallow platform above deep Caribbean water
Most of Lighthouse Reef is only a few metres below sea level. The western lagoon reaches a maximum depth of about 3 metres, while the eastern lagoon reaches roughly 9 metres. Patch reefs and sediment shoals rise through both basins, giving the floor a varied pattern of reef highs and shallow carbonate flats.
Relief increases abruptly beyond the reef rim. Fore-reef slopes descend away from the platform into deep channels and the Caribbean basin, so the horizontal distance from a shallow crest to deep water is short. This isolation limits direct delivery of river sediment and distinguishes the atoll from nearshore reefs on the Belize shelf.
The platform rests on older reef limestone associated with faulted blocks along the Belize margin. Repeated low sea levels exposed that limestone to rainwater dissolution and erosion. Postglacial sea-level rise then flooded the platform, and renewed coral growth and carbonate-sediment production built the modern rim, lagoon floor, reef chains, and cayes.
A flooded karst collapse within the lagoon
The Great Blue Hole is a near-circular marine sinkhole set within a ring-shaped patch reef in the atoll lagoon. It is about 320 metres wide and 125 metres deep, an exceptional vertical depression beside water generally less than 10 metres deep. Two channels across its reef ring connect the hole with the surrounding lagoon.
The sinkhole began as a karst cavity when lower glacial sea levels left the limestone platform exposed above the sea. Fresh water dissolved the rock, and collapse enlarged the cave. Rising sea level later inundated the cavity; submerged stalactites and overhanging walls preserve evidence of its former terrestrial phase.
Water inside the hole becomes increasingly isolated with depth. The lower water column is oxygen-poor, and fine carbonate sediment accumulates on the flat floor. Layers within that sediment record the transition from a terrestrial cavity to a mangrove-fringed depression and finally to the fully marine lagoon that exists today.
Six low islands built from carbonate debris
Dry land covers only a small part of Lighthouse Reef. Six principal sandy cayes occupy the platform: Sandbore Caye and Northern Caye at the north, Long Caye toward the west-central rim, and Half Moon Caye, White Pelican Caye, and Hat Caye in the southern part of the atoll.
These cayes are accumulations of reef-derived sand and rubble rather than exposed bedrock hills. Waves and currents sort their material, commonly moving coarser coral debris toward exposed shores and finer sand toward sheltered margins. Storm overwash can shift shorelines, build rubble ridges, and open or close shallow channels.
Across the lagoon, carbonate mud and sand are produced by coral, calcareous algae, molluscs, and other skeletal material. Seagrass and calcareous algae occupy parts of the sediment floor, while patch reefs rise above it. The eastern rim contains more wave-worked reef debris; quieter lagoon areas retain finer deposits.
Marine exchange without river inflow
Lighthouse Reef has no river catchment and receives little direct sediment from mainland drainage. Its hydrology is governed by Caribbean swell, trade-wind waves, tides, regional currents, rainfall, and evaporation. Water clarity reflects the atoll’s offshore position as well as circulation through its open lagoon.
On the eastern margin, breaking waves drive water across the reef crest and flats. Flow then spreads through the lagoon, where the middle reef, patch reefs, and shoals redirect local currents. Water returns to the surrounding sea through cuts in the discontinuous leeward rim and across submerged portions of the platform edge.
The six cayes have no permanent streams. Rain either infiltrates their porous carbonate sediment, collects briefly in low ground, or drains directly to the lagoon. Exchange with the open Caribbean moderates lagoon temperature and salinity, although shallow sheltered flats respond more quickly to calm weather, strong sun, and heavy rain.
Trade winds, seasonal rain, and hurricanes
The atoll has a warm tropical maritime climate. Easterly and northeasterly trade winds dominate much of the year, creating the persistent difference between the wave-exposed eastern rim and the relatively sheltered western margin. The surrounding sea limits daily temperature swings compared with the mainland.
Rainfall is seasonal, with most rain falling from roughly June through November and a generally drier period from February through April. Because relief is minimal and the cayes have small, porous catchments, this rainfall does not create a developed surface-drainage network.
Tropical storms and hurricanes produce the largest short-term physical changes. Storm waves can cross the reef rim, drive strong currents into the lagoon, move reef rubble and sand, reshape caye margins, and deposit event layers in the Great Blue Hole. Cooler-season fronts also alter wind and wave direction, but tropical cyclones generate the strongest geomorphic disturbances.
The outer atoll of the Belize reef complex
Lighthouse Reef forms the oceanward end of a cross-shelf sequence extending from the Belize mainland through coastal lagoons and cayes, across the Belize Barrier Reef, past Turneffe Atoll, and into deep Caribbean water. Its exposure to the open sea and lack of river input give it a different physical setting from reefs close to the mainland.
At the regional scale, the atoll belongs to the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef province of the western Caribbean. Within the reef hub, it is a useful counterpart to Glover’s Reef: Lighthouse Reef has a shallower, strongly divided lagoon, whereas Glover’s Reef has a deeper basin crowded with hundreds of patch reefs.
