What Abrolhos Bank is
Abrolhos Bank is a marine platform rather than a single reef. It interrupts the otherwise narrower eastern Brazilian continental shelf with a broad, shallow projection into the South Atlantic. Water across much of the upper bank is less than 30 metres deep, although the seabed descends toward a shelf break commonly placed near 70 metres and locally within a wider 60–100-metre depth range.
The best-known reef complex occupies the northern bank and is arranged in nearshore and offshore arcs. Farther across the platform, submerged reefs, hard carbonate bottoms, rhodolith beds, sand and mud fields, bedforms, paleochannels, and shelf valleys form a varied seafloor mosaic. The name “Abrolhos Bank” therefore refers to a larger physical unit than either the reef complex or the archipelago within it.
A bulge in Brazil’s Atlantic margin
The bank lies approximately between 16°40′ and 19°40′ south and 37°20′ and 39°10′ west. It fronts the coast from southern Bahia toward northern Espírito Santo, with the town of Caravelas near the central coastal sector. Its north–south reach is about 500 kilometres, while the shelf widens seaward to roughly 200–245 kilometres at its broadest.
Royal Charlotte Bank continues the broad-shelf setting to the north. South of Abrolhos, the shelf narrows markedly near the Doce River sector before widening again farther along southeastern Brazil. To the east, the shelf edge gives way to the continental slope and deep South Atlantic, placing shallow reef terrain beside ocean-basin water.
Reef arcs divided by long channels
The northern reef complex forms two broad arcs roughly parallel to the mainland. The inner, or coastal, arc lies about 10–20 kilometres offshore and extends for more than 100 kilometres. Here, closely spaced reef pinnacles have merged at their expanded tops to form irregular bank reefs, including the extensive Parcel das Paredes.
The outer arc lies around the Abrolhos Archipelago, roughly 60–70 kilometres from the coast. Giant isolated pinnacles and the Parcel dos Abrolhos rise from water generally about 20–35 metres deep. Fringing reefs occupy the margins of the archipelago’s five small islands: Santa Bárbara, Redonda, Siriba, Sueste, and Guarita.
Two coast-parallel troughs organize water and sediment movement between these zones. The shallow Sueste Channel separates the coastal arc from the mainland, while the broader Abrolhos Channel lies between the inner and outer arcs. Transverse channels and smaller gaps cut across reef and bank surfaces.

Carbonate terrain over a rifted margin
The bank top has low regional relief, but its local terrain is intricate. Abrolhos reefs commonly form chapeirões: steep-sided biogenic columns with broadened, mushroom-like tops. Individual pinnacles may rise many metres above the surrounding bottom, and neighboring tops may merge into larger bank reefs. Elsewhere, drowned reef clusters occur at different depth levels, recording periods when sea-level rise outpaced upward reef growth.
Paleochannels and shelf-incised valleys preserve drainage patterns formed when lower sea level exposed parts of the platform. Bedforms mark sediment transport across the modern seabed. Cup-shaped depressions known as buracas cut consolidated carbonate substrate on the middle and outer shelf; mapped examples occur in water tens of metres deep and may extend well below the surrounding floor.
Beneath the modern carbonate cover is a sedimentary continental margin altered by major Cenozoic magmatism. Large buried igneous bodies underlie parts of the bank, and shallow diabase intrusions emerge as the Abrolhos Archipelago. At the outer edge, the gentle shelf surface turns down the continental slope toward deep Atlantic water.
A mixed continental and carbonate shelf
Sediment changes from landward to seaward across the bank. Sand, mud, and other material supplied from the continent have greater influence on the inner shelf, while carbonate sediment, reef framework, and extensive rhodolith beds become more prominent toward the middle and outer platform. The result is a mixed shelf rather than a uniformly coral-built surface.
The Jequitinhonha and Doce rivers influence the northern and southern limits of the wider bank region. Near its central coast, the Caravelas and Peruípe rivers enter through a shared estuarine zone. Their plumes deliver freshwater and suspended sediment to coastal water, but the outer reef arc is separated from direct river mouths by many kilometres of shelf and by the inner channels.
Past river courses also matter. During glacial low sea levels, streams crossed exposed parts of the shelf and cut valleys into its surface. Postglacial flooding submerged those valleys, leaving them to guide present-day seabed relief, sediment accumulation, and some cross-shelf connections.
Wind, tide, and the Brazil Current
Water moves through Abrolhos Bank under several overlapping controls. Tides are especially important to cross-shelf motion, while winds strongly influence the variable along-shelf flow over the middle bank. Measurements in the main shelf channels commonly show currents aligned with their northeast–southwest orientation, with mean flow tending southwestward but frequent reversals and changes in strength.
Near the shelf edge, the southward-flowing Brazil Current and its eddies interact with the bank’s projecting outline. This boundary-current variability promotes cross-shelf exchange and mixing between oceanic water and shallower bank water. Landward, runoff and estuarine discharge alter coastal salinity and turbidity, while waves resuspend sediment over reef flats and shallow bottoms.
The bank’s relief divides these flows. Water is steered along the Sueste and Abrolhos channels, passes between reefs, and crosses submerged highs. Because the shelf is broad and shallow, wind changes can affect a large water area before flow reaches the outer margin.
Tropical marine controls and seasonal winds
Abrolhos lies near the transition between tropical eastern Brazil and the more subtropical coast to the south. Warm South Atlantic water moderates air temperature over the bank, and low island relief produces almost no local rain shadow. Climate reaches the seafloor mainly through wind-driven currents, surface heating and cooling, rainfall, river discharge, and storm waves.
Northeasterly winds are typical in spring and summer, easterly winds become more prominent in winter, and southeasterly flow occurs during parts of the transition seasons. Passing cold fronts from southern Brazil can interrupt the trade-wind pattern, reverse coastal currents, increase wave energy, and cool or mix the shallow water. Seasonal rainfall and river flow chiefly affect the coastward side of the platform.
Where tropical shelf meets open Atlantic
Abrolhos Bank forms the central shallow platform in a broader sequence of eastern Brazilian margin features. Royal Charlotte Bank lies to the north, the narrower Doce River shelf lies to the south, and the Vitória–Trindade seamount chain extends eastward into the Atlantic from the continental margin. These connections place Abrolhos between coastal drainage, buried igneous relief, carbonate production, and western-boundary-current circulation.
Within the reef hub, Abrolhos can be compared with the Amazon Reef. Both occupy Brazil’s Atlantic margin, but Abrolhos lies on a broad, shallow bank with two reef arcs and relatively limited direct river influence offshore, whereas the Amazon system is strongly organized by a major river plume over the outer shelf.
