What the Eastern Ghats are
The Eastern Ghats form the eastern highland margin of much of the Indian Peninsula. They stand inland from the Bay of Bengal and commonly separate parts of the Deccan and adjoining plateaus from broad coastal plains. Unlike the more continuous escarpment of the Western Ghats, however, the Eastern Ghats are divided into many distinct blocks by river valleys, sedimentary basins, low corridors, and long-term erosion.
The name therefore describes a regional assemblage rather than a single uniform range. Northern massifs in Odisha and northern Andhra Pradesh, the Nallamala and associated ranges farther south, and hill groups such as the Javadi, Shevaroy, and Kalrayan hills differ in structure and elevation but share a broad plateau-edge setting.
From the Mahanadi region toward the southern highlands
The belt trends generally northeast to southwest through Odisha and northern Andhra Pradesh, then appears as a succession of lower ranges and plateaus across southern Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Its eastern edge may rise sharply above nearby lowlands in some sectors, while its western side often merges more gradually with dissected plateau country.
Continuity varies along the route. The northern sector contains some of the broadest and highest terrain, including the Koraput uplands and massifs near the Odisha-Andhra Pradesh border. Farther south, large breaks around the Godavari and Krishna corridors separate the uplands into recognizable hill systems. Near the southern end, Eastern Ghats hill groups approach the Nilgiri and Biligiri Rangan uplands, where the eastern and western highland systems are regionally connected.
Ancient rocks and deeply weathered relief
Much of the Eastern Ghats is underlain by very old, strongly metamorphosed continental crust. Gneiss, charnockite, khondalite, quartzite, and related rocks occur across the belt, recording repeated deformation and metamorphism deep in Precambrian time. Resistant rock masses survive as steep-sided ridges and rounded summits, while weaker zones have been lowered into valleys, pediments, and broad weathered surfaces.
The physical range and the geological Eastern Ghats Mobile Belt overlap, but they are not identical. Some southern hill groups included in the geographic Eastern Ghats belong to different crustal blocks and structural histories. For a terrain-first atlas, the unifying pattern is the modern landscape: ancient uplands broken into separate massifs and dissected by long erosion.
Massifs and dissected plateaus
High blocks, residual ridges, scarps, and deeply cut valleys replace the continuous crest found in younger mountain systems.
Crystalline basement
Ancient metamorphic rocks preserve a complex crustal history beneath the present eroded surface.
Plateau-to-coast transition
The uplands connect the interior peninsula to piedmonts, coastal plains, river basins, and Bay of Bengal deltas.
Cross-range rivers and local headwaters
The Eastern Ghats do not form one continuous drainage divide. Several of peninsular India's largest east-flowing rivers begin well to the west and cross the upland belt through broad gaps or entrenched valleys. The Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna, and Kaveri link interior basins to coastal plains and ultimately the Bay of Bengal, dividing the Ghats into northern, central, and southern sectors.
Within the hills, shorter streams collect runoff from steep slopes and plateau surfaces. Some descend directly toward the coastal plain; others join the large cross-range rivers or flow inland to their tributaries. Seasonal rainfall produces strong changes in discharge, while weathered rock, fractures, valley fills, and local reservoirs affect how water is stored and released between wet and dry periods.
Changing monsoon controls along the belt
The long north-south extent of the Eastern Ghats places different sectors under different monsoon influences. Northern and central uplands receive much of their rain during the southwest monsoon, and Bay of Bengal weather systems can bring heavy rain to east-facing terrain. In the southern ranges, the northeast monsoon becomes increasingly important, especially across the Tamil Nadu sector during the final months of the year.
Elevation generally makes the higher plateaus cooler and can enhance rainfall where moist air is lifted, but the broken range is not a uniform climatic wall. Rainfall changes with latitude, distance from the coast, slope exposure, and the position of river gaps. Interior-facing basins and leeward slopes can be markedly drier than nearby windward highlands, especially through the long dry season.
Between the peninsula and the Bay of Bengal
The Eastern Ghats occupy a transition zone between inland plateaus and India's eastern coastal lowlands. Upland erosion supplies sediment to river valleys and piedmonts, while major river corridors carry water and sediment through the range to broad alluvial plains and deltas. The hills also interrupt the coastal plain locally, bringing hard-rock relief closer to the shoreline in some sectors and retreating far inland in others.
Within Geography Atlas, the Eastern Ghats belong in the Mountain Hub as an example of an ancient, discontinuous highland system. Their significance lies less in extreme elevation than in the way fragmented relief, cross-range drainage, monsoon variability, and plateau-margin structure organize a large part of eastern peninsular India.
