What Lake Okeechobee is
Lake Okeechobee is the largest open-water feature in the connected Kissimmee–Okeechobee–Everglades system. It occupies a broad depression on the low Florida peninsula, where differences in elevation are measured in meters rather than in mountain-scale relief. The lake is nearly circular in plan and extends roughly 30 to 37 miles across, yet its water column is shallow over most of the basin.
The lake is best understood as both a water body and a transition between landscapes. River and canal flows enter through low floodplains and wet prairies, open water covers the basin interior, and a wide littoral zone of marsh and submerged vegetation occupies much of the western and southern margins. Beyond the rim lie flat former wetlands, agricultural plains, and the wider Everglades lowland.
The center of the south Florida watershed
Lake Okeechobee lies inland from both the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico in south-central Florida. The Kissimmee River approaches from the north, Fisheating Creek reaches the western shore, and the Everglades lowlands spread southward from the lake. Low sandy ridges and better-drained ground stand east and west of the broader wetland depression, but no high upland encloses the basin.
The shoreline crosses Glades, Hendry, Martin, Okeechobee, and Palm Beach counties. Its modern edge is strongly influenced by the Herbert Hoover Dike, perimeter canals, and water-control structures. These works sharpen the boundary between lake and surrounding land in many places, although the inner shore still includes broad marshes, bays, shoals, and low islands.
A low depression with open water and marsh shelves
The lake occupies a slight depression formed on the low, sediment-covered carbonate platform of the Florida peninsula. Marine deposition, erosion, and some solution of limestone and marl helped shape the regional surface during the Pleistocene. Later sea-level rise raised groundwater across southern Florida, while organic and mineral sediment accumulated through the surrounding wetland system.
Lake-bottom relief is subdued. Mud, sand, shell material, and organic sediment cover a gently sloping floor that reaches only modest depths even near the interior. The eastern and central portions contain most of the open-water basin, while broad western and southern littoral shelves support emergent marsh, submerged vegetation, shallow bays, and natural levee or island features. Wind can move water across this broad, shallow surface and temporarily raise levels along one shore while lowering them on another.

Northern inflow, seasonal storage, and managed outlets
The Kissimmee River is the principal river entering Lake Okeechobee. Other inflows include Fisheating Creek, Taylor Creek–Nubbin Slough, smaller tributaries and canals, direct rainfall, and groundwater exchange. Because the surrounding land is so flat, water may move slowly through floodplains, marshes, canals, and storage areas before reaching the open lake.
Historically, high lake stages spread water across the low southern rim and into the Everglades as broad sheet flow. Today, the dike and canal network regulate that connection. Major managed routes run east through the St. Lucie Canal, west through the Caloosahatchee system, and south through several canals toward agricultural and Everglades water-management areas. Evaporation is also a major loss from the lake surface, especially during warm, dry, and windy periods.
Water level varies with wet-season rainfall, dry-season losses, tropical storms, upstream inflow, and managed releases. The lake's shallow form makes depth and shoreline position sensitive to relatively small changes in stage. Strong winds can produce seiches and resuspend fine bottom sediment, linking atmospheric conditions directly to nearshore depth, turbidity, and wave action.
Subtropical wet and dry seasons
Lake Okeechobee lies in south Florida's warm subtropical climate. Summer brings high temperatures, frequent thunderstorms, and most of the annual rainfall, while winter and early spring are generally drier and less humid. The nearby Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico supply moisture, but the lake's inland setting allows strong daily heating and convective storm development across the peninsula.
Tropical storms and hurricanes can deliver intense rain and sustained winds, rapidly changing inflow, lake stage, waves, and wind-driven water distribution. During dry periods, evaporation and limited inflow lower the water surface and expose or shallow parts of the littoral zone. Seasonal ice is absent; the main climatic contrasts are between wet and dry conditions and between calm periods and major wind or rainfall events.
Kissimmee basin, Everglades, and coastal outlets
Lake Okeechobee is the central storage basin in a watershed that begins among central Florida lakes, follows the Kissimmee River south, and continues through the Everglades toward Florida Bay. The lake therefore connects river-floodplain geography to a broad wetland plain. Modern canals also create strong east-west links with the St. Lucie and Caloosahatchee estuaries, connections that differ from the mainly southward pattern of the pre-drainage landscape.
