What Lake Constance is
Lake Constance is a system of two natural lake basins rather than one uninterrupted expanse of open water. The larger Obersee, including the northwestern Überlinger See arm, contains most of the lake's area, volume, and depth. At Konstanz, water narrows into the short Seerhein before entering the much shallower Untersee, which is divided by islands and peninsulas into the Gnadensee, Zeller See, and Rheinsee.
The combined lake covers about 536 square kilometers and holds roughly 48 cubic kilometers of water. Its longest axis is about 63 kilometers. These dimensions place broad open water beside shallow littoral shelves, delta margins, constricted channels, and several distinct shoreline settings within the same connected hydrologic system.
At the northern foot of the Alps
The main basin trends roughly west-northwest from the Alpine Rhine delta and Bregenz Bay toward Konstanz and the Überlinger See. Germany borders much of the northern shore, Austria occupies the short eastern shore, and Switzerland borders the south. The linked Untersee extends west of Konstanz toward the High Rhine outlet at Stein am Rhein.
Physical regions meet sharply around the lake. The Rhine valley opens from the Alps onto a low delta at the southeastern end, and Alpine and pre-Alpine ridges rise nearby to the south and east. North and west of the lake, lower moraine hills, terraces, and plateau country replace the higher mountain relief. This transition from confined Alpine valleys to a broad foreland basin governs both the lake's shape and the spread of its catchment.
A glacial trough divided into contrasting reaches
The basin lies within the Alpine foreland and was repeatedly occupied by Rhine glaciers during the Quaternary. Moving ice deepened and widened older valleys and depressions, while erosion and deposition reshaped the surrounding lowlands. After the last major ice retreat, meltwater and re-established river drainage filled the overdeepened basin and left moraines, terraces, and sediment-filled margins around it.
The Obersee is the dominant deep-water basin. Its floor descends steeply beyond many nearshore shelves to a maximum depth of about 251 meters, while the Überlinger See forms a long, narrower arm to the northwest. The Untersee is markedly shallower and more intricate. Reichenau and neighboring peninsulas separate its sub-basins, and broad shallow-water zones occupy a much larger share of its area.

Alpine water and sediment routed through the lake
The Alpine Rhine is the principal inflow and supplies well over half of the river water entering the lake. It reaches the southeastern Obersee after draining high valleys in the central Alps. The Bregenzer Ach is the other major Alpine tributary, while the Argen, Schussen, and numerous smaller streams drain the northern and eastern foreland. Altogether, the catchment covers about 11,500 square kilometers and extends far into the Alps.
The Alpine Rhine also delivers large quantities of suspended sediment. Coarser material builds its low delta outward, while cold, sediment-laden floodwater can plunge beneath warmer surface water and travel into the deep basin as a density current. This process links short-lived mountain floods to sedimentation and circulation far from the river mouth.
Water leaves the Obersee through the Seerhein at Konstanz, crosses the Untersee, and exits as the High Rhine at Stein am Rhein. The lake is not controlled by a regulating dam, so its level follows the Alpine water cycle. Levels are commonly lowest in winter, when precipitation is stored as mountain snow and ice, and highest in early summer as snowmelt and rainfall raise the inflows.
Foreland weather shaped by lake and mountain
Lake Constance lies in a temperate setting where Atlantic weather systems, continental air, and Alpine topography interact. Moist air rising over the nearby mountain rim increases precipitation in the southern and eastern catchment, while lower foreland terrain is less strongly affected by elevation. Winter snow accumulates through much of the high basin and releases water later than rain falling near the shore.
The lake's large water volume warms and cools more slowly than the surrounding land, moderating temperatures close to the shore. Winds crossing the open Obersee generate waves and surface currents, while valleys and passes can channel stronger flows from the Alpine side. In summer, heating produces a warm surface layer above colder deep water. Cooling and wind deepen mixing during the cold season, but full circulation to the deepest water does not occur every year.
From Alpine headwaters to the North Sea basin
Lake Constance is a major storage reach within the Rhine system, not a terminal basin. Upstream, the Alpine Rhine gathers runoff from mountain valleys, snowfields, and glacier-bearing headwaters. Downstream, the High Rhine flows west from the Untersee, passes the Rhine Falls, and continues toward the Upper Rhine and the North Sea. The lake therefore links high-relief Alpine hydrology with one of Europe's long continental river corridors.
