What the Strzelecki Desert is

The Strzelecki Desert is a broad field of longitudinal dunes and sandplains in Australia's arid interior. Its low relief is interrupted less by high ground than by repeated dune crests, shallow interdune corridors, stony plains, dry channels, and lake depressions around its southern margin.

In atlas terms, the desert is the southeastern part of the wider Simpson-Strzelecki dunefield system. Wind has arranged extensive supplies of basin sediment into long, nearly parallel sand ridges, while rare floods and local runoff have cut or occupied low corridors through the aeolian terrain.

Extent

A three-state desert in the Lake Eyre Basin

The desert extends across northeastern South Australia, southwestern Queensland, and the far west of New South Wales. Its core lies east of the Lake Eyre lowlands and north of the Flinders Ranges, with Cooper Creek and the Channel Country near its northern edge and the Lake Blanche-Lake Callabonna system near the south.

These borders are geographic transitions rather than sharp lines. Dunes grade into the stony surfaces of the Sturt Stony Desert toward the east, into the Tirari and Simpson desert systems toward the west and northwest, and into lake plains and piedmont terrain closer to the northern Flinders Ranges. The named desert covers about 80,250 square kilometres, although mapped ecological and landform regions use different boundaries.

Relief

Long sand ridges over a subdued basin surface

Longitudinal dunes give much of the Strzelecki Desert a strong linear grain. The ridges commonly run broadly north-south and are separated by swales that may contain firmer sand, clay, gravel, or thin alluvial deposits. Dune heights and spacing vary, and the pattern becomes less continuous where creeks, floodouts, stony plains, and lake margins interrupt the sand cover.

Beneath this surface are the sedimentary rocks of the Cooper and Eromanga basin region. Their broad, gentle structure contributes to the desert's low regional relief. In places, erosion and deflation expose gibber pavements or shape small irregular sandhills and eroded knolls, while fine sediment and salts accumulate in shallow depressions.

Strzelecki Creek and rare basin-scale floods

Strzelecki Creek is the desert's defining watercourse. It leaves Cooper Creek near Innamincka and follows a generally south-southwesterly course for about 200 kilometres toward Lake Blanche. The channel is dry for long intervals, but large Cooper floods can send water into it, filling channel pools and occasionally carrying flow far across the dunefield.

Lake Blanche is part of a shallow interconnected lake district that includes Lakes Callabonna and Gregory. These lakes are usually dry under the present climate, and their beds store fine sediment and salts between uncommon inundations. Elsewhere, rainfall produces short-lived flow in minor channels, sheetwash across hard surfaces, and temporary ponding in swales or pans. Most water is then lost through infiltration and strong evaporation rather than reaching a permanent outlet.

Climate

Continental aridity and highly variable rain

The Strzelecki Desert has a hot arid climate maintained by its inland position, frequent subtropical high pressure, low and unreliable rainfall, and high evaporation. Summer heat is intense, while winter nights can be cool because dry air and clear skies allow rapid heat loss after sunset.

Rainfall may come from summer thunderstorms and occasional southward incursions of tropical moisture. Southern margins can also receive rain from cooler-season weather systems, but neither source is dependable. Long dry periods are therefore punctuated by irregular storms or distant catchment floods, so the largest hydrologic events may reflect rain that fell well beyond the desert itself.

Connections

Between Channel Country and the southern salt lakes

The Strzelecki Desert belongs in the Desert Hub as a dryland shaped jointly by wind and episodic water. Its longitudinal dunes connect it physically with the Simpson Desert, but the creek corridor and southern lake plains create a distinctive internal structure.

Its drainage also connects directly with the wider Lake Eyre basin system. Cooper Creek floodwater can enter the desert from the north, while Lake Blanche and neighboring dry lakes occupy terminal lowlands toward the south. This makes the Strzelecki a transition between Channel Country watercourses, central Australian dunefields, and the salt-lake landscapes north of the Flinders Ranges.
